The 33 to 63 litre front loading 'Benchtop' autoclaves are available in two versions. Both require no plumbing, and operate from a standard single phase power supply. ‘Classic’ and ‘Ecofill’ models are available.
Astell benchtop 'Ecofill' units are one of the most energy efficient autoclaves available. The pressure vessel design ensures the absolute minimum amount of water is used during a sterilization cycle, which not only means comparably low power consumption, but also very quick heating and cooling.
A benchtop autoclave has a variety of uses, being suitable for sterilizing laboratory glassware, plastic receptacles and containers, petri dishes, un-wrapped instruments, media, and occasional discard loads.
In addition to laboratory use, it is not uncommon for benchtop autoclaves to be employed in other areas. In fact Astell regularly supplies its compact sterilizers for use in scientific research, process manufacturing, veterinary and medical healthcare industries to name but a few.

The Astell Benchtop and Compact ranges (33 - 63 Litres) are available in two different versions which have two totally different systems for filling the autoclave with water.
These are as follows:
THE 'CLASSIC' VERSION (E.G. THE AMA440 OR AMB420-AMB440)
Classic - The 'Classic' version is the simplest type of autoclave in Astell’s range. Water is poured directly into the chamber of the autoclave by the user and the colour touch screen advises when the water is at the correct level.
During the cycle at the freesteaming stage, a small amount of condensate is generated which leaves the autoclave by a flexible hose located at the back of the unit. The flexible hose should then be placed into a drain or a heat resistant condensate collection bottle (available separately as an additional option). At the end of each cycle the user is then prompted by the touch screen display to top up the water level to the correct level before starting another cycle.
THE 'ECOFILL' VERSION (E.G. THE AMA240 OR AMB220-AMB240)
The 'Ecofill' version of Benchtop and Compact range autoclaves uses Astell’s unique Autofill water recirculation system - meaning that there is no need for the autoclave to be connected to any services other than a standard electric power supply. The Ecofill version differs from the 'Classic' version in that it has an integral reservoir built into the inside of the unit. The user simply has to top up this internal tank via a removable screw lid, and a single fill will last for approximately 15 cycles. At the start of each cycle the chamber is automatically filled from the reservoir, and following sterilization the autoclave then automatically drains any excess water from the chamber and returns it to the internal tank. This saves the user having to top up the autoclave after every cycle, and also ensures that no provision for condensate collection is necessary. Due to the recirculating nature of the steam/water flow, an added benefit is no external steam leakage during the freesteaming stage of a sterilization cycle.
